Water Heliconia Yellow - Plant

Common name - Peacock's beak/Water Heliconia Yellow

Scientific name-Heliconia psittacorum

Description

Heliconias prefer freely draining soils with high organic matter. They are heavy feeders and they need lots of water. They are best grown on slopes or raised beds for good drainage and they need plenty of space. Heavy mulching is recommended to protect the soil from drying out, and to enhance the soil's organic matter.

Plant care and instruction

Give your heliconia bright light and water it regularly, but be careful not to overwater. Let the soil almost dry out between watering, and avoid allowing heliconias to stand in water. Heliconias grow best in temperatures of at least 70 degrees F or higher, and should never be subjected to temps below 50 F.

Special features

Heliconias are sometimes called “lobster claws” or “parrot flowers” because of their beak-like “bracts” which can be orange, purple, red, yellow, pink, green or a combination of these. ... This keeps the flower's sweet nectar tucked away so that only specialized birds can get to it.
