Dischidia ruscifolia Variegata, Million Hearts Plant

Common name(s): Million Hearts

Scientific name: Dischidia ruscifolia

Description

Dischidia is an epiphytic small growing tropical succulent plant, related to a Hoya, with trailing stems. These plants grow on supports such as tree trunks or branches. Their stems may produce roots along the nodes to absorb nutrients and water and provide additional support for the plant. Dischidia 'ruscifolia is a decorative plant with stiff, slender green shoots that grow up to 3.3 feet long before taking root at the tip and continuing. They are densely decorated in pairs of stiff, succulent, heart-shaped leaves. Many tiny white flowers appear on the internodes and remain for long periods of time. The plant looks graceful in a hanging pot but is found in dense clumps and clusters on overhead tree branches in its habitat. This plant is attractive to bees, butterflies, and/or birds.

Dischidia Ruscifolia Variegata Plant care and instructions

Morning sunlight of 1-3 hours a day is ideal and plants grow well in bright light for the rest of the day. Protect the plant from direct harsh sunlight as it can cause damage to the foliage. The soil should be well-drained, fertile, and rich in organic content for growing million heart plants. Poke your finger/plain small stick into the soil to check the moisture. Apply 1 cup(approx.50ml) of water when the topsoil (3-4 inches) in the pot feels dry to touch. Do not overwater the plant. As a rule of thumb, water the plants thoroughly in summer and reduce watering in the winter and rainy seasons. Water should be applied preferably in the morning or evening. Before application of fertilizer loosen the topsoil without disturbing the roots of the plant so it can uptake the nutrients and moisture easily. Apply organic fertilizer once a month. Apply water immediately after the application of fertilizer. Remove dead, infected, or damaged plant parts and discard them away from the plants. For any insect attack or disease, you can use Neem oil, Eucalyptus oil, or Citrus oil spray for primary treatment. Do not overwater the plant especially when the pot doesn't have a drainage hole. Avoid applying water on flowers and leaves because it may cause fungus infection. Keep away from AC vents.

This epiphytic plant is native to Asia where it can be found growing attached to trees or clinging to cliff walls.
