Common Name - Croton
Scientific Name - Codiaeum variegatum Gold Star
Description
The croton "Gold Star" is an evergreen tropical. This variety has green leaves speckled with bright gold, like a constellation of stars on each leaf. Crotons grow best in well-drained soil and in full sun to partial shade. Too much sun will bleach the color out of the leaves and too little will cause the leaves to be more green. Place your croton where it will receive six to eight hours of bright, unfiltered sunlight each day. Provide shade from direct summer sun during the hottest part of the day. Keep leaves dust-free and shiny by wiping them with a damp cloth. Dry air and soil will cause croton leaves to fall off.
Codiaeum variegatum plant Care and Instruction
Codiaeum variegatum or Croton is a hard-to-grow house plant with brightly colored leaves. Best foliage color develops in high light to semi-sun. Allow the soil surface to dry slightly between waterings. Any house plant fertilizer may be used according to label directions during the growing season. Croton requires a minimum temperature of 60°F (15°C) with ideal temperatures 80°F (27°C). Repot in March and expect lower leaves to drop as the plant ages. Croton responds to extra humidity but leaf drop occurs in low humidity or temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
